🌱 Food loss reduction initiative!
————————————————-
Okayama University is launching the “Nokori Fuku Campaign 2026,” a tech-driven initiative to tackle food waste by connecting consumers with discounted supermarket items in real time📱
Running from January 9 to March 31, 2026, the campaign will take place across four stores, including the university co-op and local supermarkets in Okayama.
🍱 By installing webcams in food sections, the project captures live images of discounted items such as bento boxes, sashimi and prepared foods. Using AI-OCR technology, product names, original prices, and discount rates are automatically read and delivered straight to a smartphone app, making it easier than ever to spot deals and reduce waste.
♻️ Led by Professor Yasuhiro Matsui, the initiative builds on earlier experiments and is supported by Japan’s Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries through its national food loss reduction program.
